Frozen 2 is Official, Kung Fu Panda 3 News, And More (Woody’s Roundup #2)

Welcome to the second episode of Woody’s Roundup, a segment here on The Reel Insider. In this segment, each Saturday I’ll put together all of the animation related news and share it with you along with my thoughts. I’m a huge fan of animation as an art style (not a genre) and I want to share it here more! So, let’s get started on this week! (March 8-14, 2015)

New “Inside Out” Trailer

I’m not going to go into this trailer, considering I made a whole post on it. Let’s just say I’m really excited! (Click here to check out the full post)

An “Inside Out” Themed Short Will Appear on It’s Blu-Ray

Variety released a post explaining 10 Animators people should Watch. One of these 10 is Pixar animator, Josh Cooley. In his section of the post, it was explained that Cooley is the current head os story on the next Pixar film, Inside Out. It also mentions that he directed a recent Inside Out themed short that will be on Inside Out’s Blu-Ray. I’m excited to see this short, especially considering the last film-themed shorts that have been on past Pixar Blu-Rays.

“Toy Story 4” to be Co-Directed by Josh Cooley

In the same Variety article, it was revealed that Josh Cooley would also be co-directing the next Toy Story sequel, along with main director John Lasseter. This is simply all that we know about this news, but I’m excited to see Cooley at work on Toy Story 4. I am extremely excited for Inside Out, and Cooley being a big part of it makes me more excited to see how the fourth Toy Story film will turn out.

There Have Been “Rumblings” on a “Big Hero 6” Sequel

Voice of Honey Lemon from the first film (Genesis Rodriguez) recently had an interview for the film, Run All Night. In this interview, she spilled a little about a possible Big Hero 6 sequel. Check it out:

How is it to have your name attached to a now Oscar-winning project?

Genesis: It’s cool. It’s really cool.

Have they lined you up for a sequel or anything yet?

Genesis: There’s rumblings of something else happening. I mean yesterday I just saw that it’s the third most grossing Disney animated feature, so this is huge for them. I doubt that they wouldn’t want to do another one. It was a huge success.

That’s typically the way they work.

Genesis: Right? But they are doing ‘Frozen.’ So, who knows? Maybe they’ll do something with ‘Big Hero 6.’

What do you do with the number? “Big Hero 6.2”?

Genesis: Well, it’s a comic book, so they have so many… It’s a Marvel franchise that Disney adapted. Just like comic books, you could make it a complete different story and the superheroes reunited to attack someone else. So it’s a perfect little setup they got for a sequel if they wanted to.

I’m excited to see what Disney would do with a sequel and Im glad they are at least talking about an idea. Regardless of the release of a sequel or not, it’s good to here these “rumblings”.

New “Frozen Fever” Poster, Plot Details, and Song!

The official poster for the Frozen-themed short, Frozen Fever, released earlier this week. (You can see it on the right) I really like the look of the poster and those little snow creatures, apparently called “snowgies”.

Along with the poster, we got a little information regarding the short. Producer of the short, Peter Del Vecho, mentioned this about the little creatures:

We realized we wanted Olaf to remain pure, so quickly it evolved into these fun little snowballs we call ‘snowgies’ that bring a lot of mischief and fun to the short.

Also, Frozen co-director Chris Buck mentioned the following regarding the short:

“We could see some different opportunities for some fun and that just got all of us going…Elsa’s never really been able to throw a party for Anna. They were apart most of their growing up.

Interesting to hear that there was some fun going into this short, and it not just being a money grab. I’m sure it’s a fun short!

Along with this the short’s song “Making Today a Perfect Day” was released on iTunes and YouTube. Feel fee to check the song out, but be warned that the song apparently spoils the short. Also, if you want to check the short out for your self it is in theaters now in front of Cinderella.

“Teaser Trailer for “Hotel Transylvania 2”

Sony Animation released the first official teaser trailer for it’s film for this year, Hotel Transylvania 2. While I’m not really very excited for this film, since the first one wasn’t really the best, I like this trailer. It definitely doesn’t show anything from the plot really, but it shows a little comedy, which was probably one of my favorite parts of the original.

“Frozen 2” is Official

Cue the fangirls, because a sequel to Frozen was officially announced at the Disney Shareholder’s meeting this past Thursday. (I did a write-up on the meeting itself, which you can check out by clicking here) While no official release date was released, Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee will be returning to direct. While I’m not the most excited to see this (since the first one was pretty good, but not nearly as good as the other recent Disney Animation films), I hope it’ll be a fun story and a fun movie overall.

Lots of New “Kung Fu Panda 3” News

I want to give some thanks to Rotoscopers for compiling all of this information, so that I could present it to you guys! First we have a synopsis thanks to Nick Cooke, Director of hardlines at DreamWorks Animation UK:

Po continues his now legendary legendary adventures of of awesomeness and must face two, hugely epic, but very different threads. Po has saved the world countless times, but none of that has prepared him for his greatest challenge yet – pleasing 2 fathers. Po reunites with his biological father (Bryan Cranston) and returns to his birthplace, yet soon realizes he doesn’t fit in. There he meets the overly eager Mei Mei (Rebel Wilson), who has been promised an arranged marriage to Po. Po must also battle an evil spirit called The Collector (Mads Mikkelsen), who is able to steal the powers of every Kung Fu Master he defeats – and his sights are set on Po.

Along with Cranston, Wilson, and Mikkelsen, J. K. Simmons is unofficially going to be in the film. This is thanks to Phil Craven, a storyboard artist at DreamWorks, after he posted this on Instagram:

Kung Fu Panda 3 recording with Mr. Whiplash himself ▯ Super nice guy, didn’t throw a single chair at us or spray saliva on us mid-cuss ▯ #kungfupanda #oscarwinner @HankMardukas #bff #superdeepvoice #JJonahJameson #friendlyneighborhoodkungfumaster

We also have some “leaked” images of new characters.

This character is Mei Mei, the character to be voiced by Rebel Wilson.

This character is The Collector, the character to be voiced by Mads Mikkelsen. Appearently, this character is going to be one of the most formidable villains in the Kung Fu Panda franchise.

This character is apparently named Bao, but we have no official word.

Lastly, the most exciting of the news in my opinion, is we have some word on a teaser for Kung Fu Panda 3. According to some Tumblr users who saw an early screening of DreamWorks’ film Home, a teaser for the film played in front of the screening. Sounds really great!

Genndy Tartakovsky No Longer the “Popeye” Director

Gennedy Tartakovsky revealed this week that he will no longer be directing Sony Animation’s Popeye film. He stated the following:

‘Popeye,’ at least, we put up a great screening, everybody really liked that sizzle, we got a positive reaction. I was in love with what we were doing, but I think the studio is going through changes and I don’t know if they want to make the ‘Popeye’ that I want to make. So they’ve got to make a decision. Right now, I’m off that project and moving on to the other one that we soft-announced, which is ‘Can You Imagine?’ which is an original idea of my own and a very personal story. It was hard to let ‘Popeye’ go, but that’s the business.

It’s sad to hear, but this kind of thing happens all the time. For instance, Bob Peterson of Pixar was taken off as director of The Good Dinosaur for the same reason. I hope to see Tartakovsky working well on his original project.

“The Lego Movie Sequel” Will Take Place In a Dystopian World

Following a Lego Movie screening at the Santa Barbara Film Festival, directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller came out to have a Q and A session. Obviously, some questions regarding the sequel came up. Lord and Miller said that The Lego Movie Sequel will take place a little while after the original in a “weird, dystopian version of Bricksburg”. Along with this, they revealed that a new character would join the main characters in the sequel. Appearently, Emmet’s sister will join him (and most likely some of the other main characters of the original) in this dystopian setting. I’m excited to see where they take this sequel, especially because I loved the first one so much!

That concludes this weeks Woody’s Roundup. Be sure to tune in each Saturday for a collection of next week’s animation news. Feel free to share your thoughts on this news in the comments below and please like this if you enjoyed it!

New Star Wars Details and More! (Disney Shareholder Meeting 2015)

Every year Disney holds a meeting for their shareholders, in which they announce all sorts of news! So, I’ll compile all of the news from this year’s meeting here on this post.

“Rouge One” To Be the First Star Wars Standalone Film

At the shareholder meeting, Bob Iger announced that the first standalone Star Wars film (to be released on December 16, 2016) is going to be title “Rouge One”. Star Wars’ official site posted these details on the film:

“Rogue One is the title for the first film in a unique series of big-screen adventures that explores the characters and events beyond the core Star Wars saga. Rogue One will be directed by Gareth Edwards (Monsters, Godzilla) and written by Oscar nominee Chris Weitz (Cinderella, About a Boy, Antz). The first actress cast is Felicity Jones, who garnered an Academy Award nomination and critical acclaim for her performance in The Theory of Everything. The idea for the story of Rogue One came from John Knoll, an Academy Award-winning visual effects supervisor and chief creative officer at Industrial Light & Magic. He will executive produce along with Simon Emanuel (The Dark Knight Rises, Fast & Furious 6) and Jason McGatlin (Tintin, War of the Worlds). Kathleen Kennedy and Tony To (Band of Brothers, The Pacific) are on board to produce and John Swartz (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) will co-produce. The film starts shooting this summer in London and is due for release on December 16, 2016.”

Star Wars VIII Release Date

Star Wars VII, written and directed by Rian Johnson , is officially being released on May 26, 2017. Star Wars’ official site posted these details on the film:

In addition, Iger confirmed that Rian Johnson will write and direct Star Wars: Episode VIII. The film, which continues the saga after the events of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, is set for release on May 26, 2017 — forty years and a day after the release of Star Wars: A New Hope in 1977. Johnson is widely considered one of cinema’s most gifted young filmmakers, having directed the modern sci-fi classic, Looper, as well as Brick and The Brothers Bloom. He was also behind the camera for three episodes of the critically-acclaimed TV series Breaking Bad, including “Ozymandias,” which series creator Vince Gilligan named as the best installment of the show. Kathleen Kennedy and Ram Bergman, producer of Looper, Don Jon, Brick, and The Brothers Bloom, are on board to produce.

“Frozen 2” Officially Announced

The sequel to the box-office hit Frozen was announced officially today. The directors and writers of the original, Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee, will be coming back for the sequel, although it is not official as to if they will be directing the sequel. The only returning cast member that is official is Josh Gad, who will return as Olaf, although most of the main cast will most likely return.

Some pretty exciting news here! Glad to see Disney announcing some new Star Wars information. What are your thoughts? Comment below.

Brand New Inside Out Trailer!

I am so extremely excited to say that Pixar’s newest film, Inside Out, released a new trailer today. I am so excited (in fact it is my most anticipated film of 2015). So, of course I am so glad to say that this trailer is brilliant. It released this morning on EllenTube and since then has been played on the Ellen Show along with guests Amy Poehler and Bill Hader (Voices of Joy and Fear in the film respectively).

This new trailer, which you can view above, is the second trailer released for the film and release quite a bit of new information about the film. Man, I am so blown away by the creativity, humor, and beauty that this film is looking to be. I am some how more excited for this film with this new trailer.

I want to start firstly with the comedy of this trailer. I love Amy Poehler, she was great in Parks and Recreation and she is the perfect choice for Joy. Lewis Black as Anger is totally prefect, as well. It seems these to will give us most of the comedy in the film and I’m glad to see it. Check out some of my favorite lines from the trailer:

“Can I say that curse word now?”

“‘That’s long term memory. You could get lost in there.’ ‘Think positive.’ ‘Okay, I’m positive you will get lost in there.'”

“Rainbow Unicorn! She’s right there! I loved you in Fairy Dream Adventure Part 7. Okay, bye… I love you.”

“Congratulations San Fransisco, you’ve ruined pizza!”

Now to the creativity and beauty. This trailer is truly stunning, from the locations to the colors to the characters. If you don’t love the look of this film, I’m not sure what’s wrong with you.

Well, those are my basic thoughts, I hope you’re as excited to see this film on June 19 (opening day) just like I am! Comment your thoughts in the comments below.

New Inside Out Trailer, More on the Lego Movie Franchise, And More (Woody’s Roundup #1)

Welcome to a new segment here on The Reel Insider, Woody’s Roundup. In this segment, each Saturday I’ll put together all of the animation related news and share it with you along with my thoughts. I’m a huge fan of animation as an art style (not a genre) and I want to share it here more! (If you don’t know, “Woody’s Roundup” is a reference to Toy Story 2)

So, let’s get started on this week! (March 1-7, 2015)

“The Lego Movie 2” Gets a New Title & a New Director

If you know how big a fan of the first Lego Movie that I was, you could guess that I’m really excited for it’s sequel and spin-off. Well, the previously called “The Lego Movie 2” is officially titled “The Lego Movie Sequel”. It sounds like a strange title, but it seems like the kind of name that fits with the writer’s (Phil Lord and Chris Miller) humor. Although, that’s the other news about this sequel. The directors and writers of the first film (Phil Lord and Chris Miller) will not be returning as directors, although they’ll still be writers. Instead, Rob Schrab of TV fame, will be taking the director’s seat. Seems like a good choice to me, especially seeing what Lord and Miller have to say (shown below):

“We are so excited to collaborate with Rob. He is a comedy genius, a visual savant, and we have been stalking him for years. No one works harder than Rob, and his aesthetic, combined with his sense of humor, bring a strong, unique, thoughtful, and passionately nerdy voice to this project. People who know him are slapping their foreheads today and saying, ‘Of course!’”

New “Lego Batman Movie”

Recently, Phil Lord and Chris Miller had an Ask Me Anything Q&A on Reddit and some cool news regarding the Lego Batman Movie was released. They said the following:

“I can tell you that Lego Batman’s inner life as a frustrated artist will be fully explored …”

Interesting to hear some info, especially something so comedic. I really love Will Arnett as Batman and I’m sure he’ll bring some great talent to this film. Can’t wait for this film!

New “Zootopia” Synopsis and Concept Art

Zootopia, Disney Animation Studios next feature film, will not be released until March 4, 2016, but Disney released some new concept art for the film this week. Along with this art (which is shown above), Disney also release a new synopsis for the film, which is here below:

“The modern mammal metropolis of Zootopia is a city like no other. Comprised of habitat neighborhoods like ritzy Sahara Square and frigid Tundratown, it’s a melting pot where animals from every environment live together—a place where no matter what you are, from the biggest elephant to the smallest shrew, you can be anything. But when optimistic Officer Judy Hopps arrives, she discovers that being the first bunny on a police force of big, tough animals isn’t so easy. Determined to prove herself, she jumps at the opportunity to crack a case, even if it means partnering with a fast-talking, scam-artist fox, Nick Wilde, to solve the mystery. Walt Disney Animation Studios’ ‘Zootopia,’ a comedy-adventure directed by Byron Howard (‘Tangled,’ ‘Bolt’) and Rich Moore (‘Wreck-It Ralph,’ ‘The Simpsons’) and co-directed by Jared Bush (‘Penn Zero: Part-Time Hero’), opens in theaters on March 4, 2016.”

I’m excited to see more from this film, considering we haven’t seen much at all of this film (most of which was from D23 in 2013). I’m really excited to see this film, as well, it’s a pretty cool premise and I loved Wreck-It Ralph (who’s director, Rich Moore, is also directing Zootopia).

New Poster, Mindy Kaling Interview, and Sneak Peek for “Inside Out”

There’s quite a bit of news for Pixar’s next film, Inside Out, which I am very excited about! People Magazine showed off a new poster for the film on their Snapchat this week. Shown on the right, I really like this new poster, it has all of the elements that I  loved from the other posters, as well as portraying the characters emotions perfectly.

People Magazine also released an interview they had with Mindy Kaling (voice of Disgust), shown below:

People: Why were you excited to be a part of this movie?

Kaling: It’s a Pixar movie!

People: If you didn’t play Disgust, which emotion would you want to play?

Kaling: I think I could’ve nailed “Outrage.”

People: Which of the voices in your head is the loudest? Which are you encouraging to speak up more?

Kaling: These days I have been feeling so grateful for what I get to work on. Between Inside Out, The Mindy Project and writing my book, I’m so happy. I know actors who are miserable no matter what they are doing and complain constantly about their jobs, and I just don’t identify with that at all. These are such great jobs to have and it doesn’t feel like hard work when the material is so good.

People: Any emotion you think was left out of this movie?

Kaling: Nope, I think the emotions assembled are a great mix and complement each other really well.

Lastly, on Sunday during the world premiere of Disney’s live action Cinderella remake there was apparently a new Inside Out sneak peek. Not much is currently known about what happened in the sneak peek, but from what I’ve heard, it is incredible!

New “The Peanuts Movie” Posters

On Thursday, Yahoo! Movies released some exclusive domestic character posters for “The Peanuts Movie”. Check them out below:

Not too much new is shown, but I do like the style that Blue Sky is going with for this film. It keeps the look and feel of the original cartoons, but combines it with the 3D animation that most films today have. I think it does that pretty well. I hope that this film doesn’t go too mainstream and keeps the old-fashion cartooness (for lack of a better word)  of the originals.

Toy Story 4 Will Not Be Part of the Original Trilogy

This news has been out for a little while ago, but it’s just now going crazy around the web, so I’ll go ahead and add it on. Last November, Disney announced that Toy Story was getting a fourth film and that it was to be a romantic comedy. John Lasseter, director of Toy Story 1 and 2, is coming back to direct. Well, according to Pixar president Jim Morris, this film is separate from the trilogy. He said the following:

“The third movie ended in a beautiful way and completed a trilogy. I think this movie is not part of this trilogy. It is a separate story, which in turn I do not know if will be continued. Never begin a project with that in mind. It is not a continuation of the end of the story of Toy Story 3. Temporarily it is, but it will be a love story. It will be a romantic comedy. It will not put much focus on the interaction between the characters and children. I think it will be a very good movie.”

I like that this film is going to be it’s own separate film, Toy Story 3 ended the series great! I’m excited to see this especially considering that the Pixar heads could’t help, but to do this film. Toy Story 4 comes to theaters on June 16, 2017.

New “Inside Out” Trailer To Be Released on Tuesday

As I discussed in the other “Inside Out” section above, there was a sneak peek shown at the Cinderella world premiere. It looks like we’ll get to see this sneak peek (not officially that exact sneak peek, but this is my guess) this upcoming Tuesday. Inside Out’s official Twitter tweeted this out on Friday:

I am personally REALLY excited for this. Normally the second trailer of a Disney or Pixar film (especially for the more recent films) has revealed much more about the film than the first trailer and the teaser. I will be sure to write up a full post with my thoughts when it is released!

That concludes this weeks Woody’s Roundup. Be sure to tune in each Saturday for a collection of next week’s animation news. Feel free to share your thoughts on this news in the comments below and please like this if you enjoyed it!

Review – Big Hero 6

I recently watched one of my favorite animated films of last year for the first time, Big Hero 6. I have to say that from seeing the trailers and posters, I didn’t think this film would be too great, but I was pleasantly surprised. It did not have the feel to it that I expected. The furustic, technology is cool aspect play a big part into the feel of the film, and I think it was a great choice. This film has some great action and great characters as well. Baymax is one of the most huggable characters ever created. You may not expect how incredibly funny and heartfelt Baymax can be, especially by the stiff, robotic animation he has to him. Another character I want to speak about is Fred. He could have easily been a really obnoxious character, but the way Disney (as well as voice actor T.J. Miller) went with him makes a great character. He provides some of the best moments from the film, especially from a comedy standpoint. If you have not seen this film I suggest you definitely do so. It’s a must see for Marvel and/or Disney fans, especially being it includes a Stan Lee cameo. From the beginning to the end, this film captures the heart, comedy, and action that makes the Disney Revival truly special.
